We teach choir through Kodály Music Education.

The Kodály concept is an effective philosophy of music education that is oriented to the learning development of the child. Its chief aim is to instill a love of music in each child--- to bring music to each child and each child to music.

Music Appreciation
Music plays a fundamental role in the emotional development of the person. Kodály music learning is based on an educationally sound, unfolding learning sequence that examines the components of music in a building block fashion. The more one learns about music, the more understanding is developed and the greater the appreciation can be.

Music Literacy
Through the sequential learning of rhythmic and tonal syllables, each child learns to “hear with his eyes and see with his ears.” The student develops the skills that are necessary to create music from within, thus enabling him of her to sing printed music at sight, identify aurally music elements, and notate music with as much ease as writing the native language. These skills may then be transferred to other forms of music making and creating with far greater understanding.

Folk Music
America possesses a unique musical culture. Kodály educators strive to familiarize students first with music from their own heritage and then to introduce, compare, and contrast that music with music of other ethnic backgrounds. Art music is learned through the understanding of the musical complements found in the folk song.

Singing
The singing voice is the most natural instrument. It is accessible to all children. Singing alone and with others enables the development of the musician from within.

Methodology
Learning music through the Kodály approach involves a variety of techniques. Extensive use of rhythmic syllables and movement aid in the understanding of rhythm. The movable “do” system and hand signs are used to develop the understanding of intervals. All content is learned first through aural recognition and then reinforced through the use of syllabic notation that leads to standard notation.
